January 3rd, 2010

We left the town of Eagle Pass early and had a nice drive across the border. A simple and straight forward crossing and as we regrouped, some curious kids found us.

First riding through the mexican town was an amazing feeling. Watching the quiet Sunday routine of people selling papers and go about their day. Beginning part of the trip was smooth and we made some good ground. It became a little more interesting when the first set of cops stopped us and began shaking our hands and share in a conversation where all parties were not quite understanding the other. After looking at Robs paperwork, they just sent us on our way. I think a group of six certainly draws some attention.

The ride began to wind through some mountains and this was one of those moments where I knew why I was here. Mountains and motorcycles do something for me and it is a feeling that can be quite amazing. The scenery was spectacular in spots and reminded me a bit of Senecca Rocks in an area where it looks like the plates of a stegasaurus rising out of the earth. The highway was in great shape and came to realize mexico does not have many Sunday drivers. They seem to drive pretty fast. It took us a while to understand their methods and nuances of road ettiquette.

Other Noteworthy Moments:
A broken engine cutoff switch that now requires tiny pieces to be placed in held and wiggled while someone starts it and then someone holds their hands underneath so when the thing is taken out, we don´t lose the tiny copper contact.

Stopping in traffic to have that bike shut off and require help that results in another conversation with more police. A potential incident that resulted in several good laughs and mexican policeman explaining through schrades that peeing in alleys is frowned upon.

A wonderful roadside lunch.
So about 270 miles for the day and a nice relaxing evening in a quaint town.
